My first day at school essay

I cannot forget my first day at school. It was ten years ago and I was just six years old. I was unwilling to go to school, but my mother gave me sweets to eat and a promise of an ice-cream after school. That persuaded me to go to school with my father.

The school was not far from our house. The school building was quite imposing with a playground on one side of it and a beautiful garden on the other. Father took me to the headmistress who asked me my name and few questions. The interview was soon over and father took me to the school office where a clerk gave me admission.

Father left me there and returned home. Now I was alone with a school peon. My heart missed a beat at that moment. The peon took me a classroom where there were more than forty boys and girls already occupying their seats. I went to my seat and hesitatingly sat down. I looked around and saw a big blackboard and two big photographs on the wall. One of them was Gandhiji’s. There were some maps and charts also.

Just then our teacher entered. She gave us a sweet smile and said, “Good morning, children!” to an extent. She then made us say the prayer correctly. After the prayer we sat down and the teacher began to teach us the alphabet and then some chorus songs. We were let off early that day.

But on that first day of my school life, I was nervous almost all the while, feeling like a fish out of water, because everything around me was unknown to me till that day. That was how my school life began. Now ten long years have gone by and I am about to leave this dear school of mine. Still the memory of that first day of my school life will remain evergreen in my heart.

My best teacher is Mr. X. He is a well-read man. He has vast experience of life. He is always well-dressed, neat and clean. He is very smart and intelligent. He has a heart of gold. Everybody loves him and admires him for his wise head and warm heart.

He teaches us Physics and Chemistry. He is master of his subjects. His teaching is very methodical. He is regular and sincere in his work. His language is simple and interesting. His voice is clear. His ways are gentle. He does not believe in pumping learning into the heads of his students. He knows the art of making his subjects easy and interesting. He loves his work. He loves his students. He takes interest in the problems of the students and helps them. He does not like to punish any of his students. Yet he maintains very strict discipline.

His aim in life is to build our career and character. His ideal is plain living and high thinking. He often tells us wise stories and funny jokes. He makes us learn through laughter.

Mr. X is more than a teacher. We look upon him as our friend, philosopher and guide. We love him. We respect him. We obey him. We follow him.

My school reading room essay

Besides the school library, we have a reading-room in our school. It is a spacious, well-lit and airy room. It is suitably furnished with tables, chairs and stands. The reading-room remains open from 7 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mr. Ramachandran, a retired teacher, is in charge of the reading-room.

About a hundred students take benefit of the reading-room every day. ‘The Times of India’ and ‘The Indian Express’ are the dailies received in the reading-room. Besides these papers, four monthlies and two weeklies are regularly received there. ‘Science Today’, ‘India Today’, ‘The Sports Weekly’ and ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’ are some of them. The newspapers are placed on stands and also on tables. The monthlies and weeklies are also placed on tables.

Students stand at the stands or sit at the tables and read. The reading-room is used by the students to read newspapers and magazines and weeklies. They also read and study books borrowed from the school library. Some students sit in the reading-room and do their homework there. Some teachers, too, visit the reading-room regularly.

There is perfect silence in the reading-room. Students are busy reading, writing or taking notes. The reading-room in our school is a great blessing to the students who don’t have reading facilities at home. They read newspapers and magazines and add to their general knowledge. The reading-room facility with suitable reading material develops the reading habit in students.

There is a very good library in our school. It is quite a big and well-equipped library. It has about twelve thousand books. More than half the numbers of these books are in Marathi and the rest in English and Hindi.

The books are arranged in big cupboards language wise as well as subject wise. They are listed in separate registers. There are two main sections: the teachers’ section and the students’ section. In the teachers’ section there are very useful reference books like encyclopedias, dictionaries and books on grammar as well as literature. This section is used by the teachers.

The books in the students’ section are issued to us regularly. Different days of the week are allotted to students of different standards to collect books. For example, Monday is fixed for the students of the Tenth standard, Tuesday for the students of the Ninth standard and so on.

There is a librarian in charge of the library and he does the work of issuing books. He is helped by an assistant librarian and a peon. Although reading library books is not compulsory, many students take advantage of the library. I read at least two books every month. Our teachers give us valuable guidance. On their advice, many students draw their own notes and jot down important points in their notebooks as they read the library books.

Thus, we make the best use of the library. Reading helps us to increase our general knowledge. It improves our writing. We acquire the healthy habit of reading which, to my mind, is the greatest blessing of our library.

The name of my school is ‘the National High School’. It is the best school in my city. It has a big building. The building has four floors. There are forty classrooms. These rooms are big, bright and airy. There are benches, desks, a chair and a table, and a blackboard in every classroom. Photographs of famous people, and maps and charts hang on the walls.

We have a good library in our school. It contains many books on various subjects. Many newspapers and magazines are kept in a separate reading-room. We have a well-equipped laboratory. There is a big hall with a stage for our school functions. We have three for indoor games. There is a big water-room with three water-coolers. We have a large playground behind the school building. There is an up-to-date gymnasium in one corner of the playground.

We have a large staff of teachers. They are all well-qualified and experienced. They are sincere and hard-working. They love us and we love them, too. They teach us in a very interesting way. The school office has six clerks and eight peons. They do their work well, and are always helpful to us. Our principal is a man of strict discipline but he is kind-hearted. We love and respect him. I am proud of my school.

My family essay

We are a joint family. Our family name is Patel. Our family includes my grandfather, grandmother, my parents, uncle and aunts, my three cousins, my sister and myself. There are eleven members in all, in my family. My seventy-five-year old grandfather is a very strict and determined person. But he is also kind and loving. My grandmother looks after everyone. She helps my mother and aunt in their work. She tells us stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata at night.

My mother and aunt do most of the household work. My father is a computer programmer in a private company. He is an expert in his work. My uncle Sam, is a mechanical engineer. He runs a small factory. He writes science fictions, too, for newspapers and magazines. He has three children, Maya, Madhav and Manas. They study in my school. My elder sister attends her college.

Generally, there are no quarrels and exchange of hot words. And if sometimes there is some trouble, my grandfather quickly intervenes and everything goes on well. Our family helps the neighbors who are in difficulty. So it is well respected. I love my family.
